white sandwich bread on a cutting board

Ingredients

  • 2 cups warm water
  • 2 tablespoons active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup (4 tablespoons) honey or sugar
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • 6 cups flour

Directions

  1. Whisk together 2 cups 110ºF water, 2 tablespoons yeast, and 1/4 cup sugar and let sit until foamy. 5-10 minutes
  2. Melt 2 tablespoons butter in microwave on Melt setting. Cover with a paper towel before placing in the microwave to avoid splashing if it explodes. Monitor it while melting.
  3. Add 2 teaspoons salt, butter, and 5 cups of flour.
  4. Add final cup of flour after mixing the dough.
  5. Knead for 5-10 minutes, adding extra 1 cup water, a few teaspoons at a time, as necessary until the flour is not flaky. Do not add too much water to make the dough sticky.
  6. Place dough in an oiled bowl, cover with plastic wrap and towel, and let rise until it’s doubled. About 1 hour.
  7. Divide in 2 parts, shape into 2 loaves by laying flat to width of bread pan and rolling.
  8. Pinch the seams and tuck the corners under.
  9. Cover with plastic wrap and towel, and let rest again in the bread pans for about 45 minutes.
  10. Bake at 350ºF for 35-40 minutes until golden brown on top.
  11. Let rest in pan for about 10 minutes then remove onto a rack.
