Milk Honey Butter Sandwich Bread

Ingredients

  • 1 egg
  • 1 packet yeast (2 1/4 teaspoons)
  • 2 1/2 tablespoons honey
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter – melted and cooled
  • 2/3 cup warm whole milk
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 3 1/4 cups bread flour – add more if too wet
  • Egg wash – 1 egg and splash of water – Optional

 

Directions

  1. Warm the milk to lukewarm
  2. Add yeast and mix together all wet ingredients in a bowl.
  3. Whisk the egg before combining
  4. Add bread flour gradually and mix until a soft dough forms.
  5. Rest the dough covered for about 15 minutes.
  6. Continue kneading until the gluten has started to develop and the dough comes together.
  7. Add salt and knead for 2-3 more minutes until the dough passes a light windowpane test.
  8. Cover and let rise until doubled. About 1 hour.
  9. Gently shape into a loaf.
  10. Place into a buttered loaf pan.
  11. Cover and let rise until puffy but still slightly springy when pressed. 20-30 minutes.
  12. Preheat oven to 350ºF.
  13. Slice 3 diagonal lines on the top of the loaf.
  14. Whisk the egg wash ingredients together and brush lightly over the loaf.
  15. Bake for 30-35 minutes.
  16. Cool in the pan for 5 minutes then remove and cool completely before slicing.
